Note: This is an old post that I forgot to publish. I found it in the archives and decided it was better late than never. Enjoy!
Hooray! On the way back from the orthodontist, fate found me and my bucket list. Listen and weep… Alright, well, you can’t listen, because WordPress requires you to buy a space upgrade in order to post audio. However, you can read it and weep (I suppose that’s how the expression really came to be). Here’s the transcript of how it went down:
DJ: Let’s see who’s calling, who’s this?
Me: This is Sarah.
DJ: What’s the winning answer, Sarah?
Me: Is it goes shopping?
DJ: I’m going to call that the winning answer. You won!
Me: Really??
DJ: The average adult woman will go grocery shopping 84 times in a year.
Me: >gasp< Really! >chortle<
DJ: That is the winning answer. Good job. You just won yourself a free meal from Subway! Coming up next…
I swear to you, this conversation reads very awkward compared to the actual sound byte I recorded of it. I do have to mention, however, that this is the edited version of that moment… To begin with, notice that I never specified ‘grocery’ shopping; well guess what? I didn’t even think of grocery shopping. I was talking about straight-up, Carrie Bradshaw, shoes and clothes from the mall, shopping. Then when the DJ said that he would ‘call that the winning answer’, I didn’t even hear him! There was a solid 15 second pause before he had to make his announcement clearer… all I can say is, thank goodness for editing. Speaking of which, I could have needed just that… the entire time I was scared to death that he was going to ask me what station ‘hooked me up’, because honestly, I had no clue. Quite literally, my mom and I were just flicking through the stations when we stumbled upon the contest with no regard as to who we were listening to. Luckily, that moment of shame never came. Although this list item was not executed with the highest level of grace, it was definitely a mini adrenaline rush that was well worth the effort… and the Subway sandwich.

This is a list item that I’ve been craving to accomplish ever since I picked up photography as a hobby when I was 11, taking pictures of sunsets off my back deck. The closest I’d ever come was submitting a lackluster picture of a frog into some big-wig National Geographic contest under my dad’s name when I was 12. However, I knew that this summer it had to be for real… and realistic. Therefore, at age 16, I mustered up the moxie to enter the county fair (for the record, our town sits on two county borders, so we have two county fairs – I chose the bigger of the two). The hardest part was definitely choosing which photos to submit. After pestering my family for 48 hours non-stop to ‘pick picture one or two’, I reached my final decisions. If I could, I would have entered more, but the limit is only five photos per entrant. I was a bit disappointed that the prints came out a shade darker than I had desired, but the overall quaility is decent. Next came the matting, which was one hell of a job in itself (my back is still complaining). My efforts did not go unappreciated though, because the presentation is very clean and professional, just as I had intended.
Here are the pictures I chose to enter:
I dropped off the pictures this afternoon, which is when the nerves finally started to kick in. Now I simply must wait… I will have the final results on Tuesday!
