Rain, rain, go away… but wait, not yet! I want to play tennis in you! And that’s exactly what I did. Although precipitation is just about the worst possible condition for the majority of my list, it’s perfect for this task! I knew that storms were in the forecast for this week, but usually we end up being the banana belt down here, missing all of the good stuff. As I had predicted, all day had gone by without a single drop. Then suddenly, I was on my computer working on things of the blogging-sort, when I heard what sounded like marbles falling onto my back deck. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window, I flew like a flash, tore open the shutters and threw up the sash! Oh wait… this sounds familiar? “RAIN!” I exclaimed. I immediately texted my friend/accomplice, Maggi, and told her to come over – it was list time! Over the course of an hour, the rain lightly came and went, and I was worried we wouldn’t be able to cross this one off. Once the rain did finally start up again, our escapade almost never happened, because in this part of the country, when it rains, it pours… and lightnings. Therefore, playing with metal tennis rackets is probably not the best idea. But hey, you can’t be old and wise if you aren’t young and dumb, right? With a little schmoozing, we snuck out down the road to the tennis courts near my house. Within minutes, not mere flashes, but entire lightning bolts illuminated our game while thunder served as the theme music. Our ball was drenched after the first serve, matching our clothes as well. Every time the thunder boomed right above our heads, you couldn’t help but scream at the prospect of being electrocuted at any minute. After less than five minutes had passed, we decided to call it quits for saftey’s sake. Although it was short-lived, this was one adventure I will definitely not forget. It’s actually made me think a little… do we realize how often we make excuses for ourselves? I can claim to be young and dumb, but I fully knew what I was getting myself into. So why did I still do it? Has making excuses become so embedded in us, that we find it acceptable to merely brush off what our conscience is telling us to do, or in this case, not do? Where has our willpower gone, whether it’s losing ten pounds or committing to finishing that art project? When did it become okay to substitute excuses for our better judgement? Just some food for thought. Let me know what you think in the comments below. Thanks for reading everyone!
Love & Summer,
Sarah
