Penguin. Penguin. Whale with penguin. Triple penguins. Double penguins. Penguin with ice cream. Three baby eagles. Elephant. Mom and baby penguin. Double penguins with bowties. Get the picture? Just about every other page in this particular coloring book is a picture of a penguin. You would expect the title of said book which one colors to be “Penguin Palooza” or perhaps “Purge of the Penguins”. The actual misleading title is “Baby Animals”. You can imagine my disappointment when I began my artistry only to discover that I would be sharing the next 50 pages with the cast of “Happy Feet”. Normally, this wouldn’t be such a letdown… normally. However, when one finds themselves with only 8 color crayons to work with and not a single one of them is black, there’s a problem. I have now colored penguins in every color… except black and orange, another color which ceased to exist in my box of Crayolas. I did discover one positive trait of the penguins; their habitats consist of snow, which as most people who have experienced winter know, is white. Subsequently, I saved myself a lot of coloring time, energy, and oh so valuable resources. Now for the real shocker: I’m left feeling unfulfilled after completing this item. I put it on the list because I hate to think of how many of my childhood coloring books were positively wasted, filled with chicken scratch and few actual completed pictures. I decided this would be my way of making up for it all. In the end though, my wrist ached, my crayons were all reduced to rubble, I was about to puke from bizarrely-colored penguin overload, and all I had to show for it was 50 pages of mediocre kid art. Maybe I should have picked a more quality coloring book. Maybe I should have opted for the super-cool 96 color crayon box with the built-in sharpener. Maybe I’m just crabby because it’s so freaking hot in Florida. I’ll never know for sure, but no matter how hard I tried to remain optimistic, I couldn’t find it in me to feel that this task worthwhile. C’est la vie. I will pride myself on one thing: I stuck it out and colored every last picture. I won’t swear it off completely, but I believe that I am all colored out for now.
