Once upon a time, there was a list item that didn’t want to be crossed off. I tried and tried again to accomplish this goal, but to no avail. However, after 2 failed attempts, #53 has finally surrendered and bowed down to me! Mwahaha! Alright, enough with the hysterics… It turns out that trying to put in colored highlights >temporarily< is a lot harder than it’s cracked up to be. I’d always heard the myth that Kool-Aid can be used to dye hair, so I decided to give it a shot with the help of my friend Shawna. That myth is completely busted. Unless you have bleached hair, I doubt this will work for you either. Take note, however, that we used the instant Kool-Aid, not the kind where you add your own sugar, so that may have made a difference in the saturation of the dye. Next I decided to try Jell-O, and this time I got fancy with it. I mixed the powder with my conditioner, streaked the paste on with a brush, wrapped the strands in tin foil, heated them with a blow dryer, and left them on for 30 minutes. The results? Nothing! I was astonished, and somewhat devastated. I knew it was time to break out the big guns: Hot Topic, one of the only stores that could carry some form of dye to satisfy my needs. Expectantly, they had just what I was looking for (plus in just about any color you could imagine). This morning after my shower, I was eager to take it for a test run. As the paste ran through my fingers, I could feeling the excitement bubbling up inside. While the color isn’t fabulous, it’s about what I expected, considering I only paid two dollars for it. As you can see in the picture, it looks decent in the light, but otherwise it’s somewhat difficult to pick out. Again, I bet if your hair is bleached, this will work much better for you. The product did come with two packets, so I can use it again this weekend at my brother’s soccer tournament. All in all, it’s cheap entertainment with a little bit of carefree thrown in, which is exactly what I was looking for… and the bucket lister lived happily ever after.
